Toledo 81st out of 100 on Fitness Index
Toledo, Ohio. It's time to have a talk, Toledo. We just ranked 81st out of of the 100 largest U.S. cities in the 2026 in the American Fitness Index. Yikes! I was honestly surprised when I read this from the Toledo Blade, August 2, 2026. We have an amazing Metroparks system, we're right on Lake Erie, and a pretty large network of YMCAs and community fitness programs. What the heck is going on? Drilling into the data reveals even more. As Amezquita reports: The city placed

Exercise Tolerance
At my last session with Louise*, we took three time outs to calm her nervous system. When exercise gets more intense, Louise's system tends to put out pain and nausea signals --especially with core work. She is under medical care and has been working with me for several months, so we both know she is not really in danger, but I always suggest we pause and break and talk until she feels like she is ready to begin again. No pushing through the pain, no sucking up the nausea.

Pivots and Adaptations - Gym Update
You know that class scene in Friends when Ross is helping move a couch up the stairwell? Well, its time to yell PIVOT!!!! My team and I have put in a lot of time, money, and energy into the potential gym at 6711 Airport Hwy; however, we have decided to terminate the lease. The landlord has had difficulty sticking to his own architecture prints, managing the shell project, and we eventually had to report him for violating fire and building code. We are currently working wit

Building Infrastructure
Strong for Life, Strong Through Menopause As women move into midlife, strength becomes so much more than fitness—it's the foundation for a healthier, stronger future. Strength training helps preserve muscle mass, support bone density, strengthen the heart , and improve balance, mobility, and independence. And let's not forget one of the most important muscles of all—the pelvic floor. A strong pelvic floor supports bladder and vaginal health, helping reduce leaks, improve conf

Let's Start Jumping! Risk, Fear, and Bone Health in Peri/Menopause
Sometimes I work with clients who are dead set against jumping–especially middle aged and older women. For most of us, we simply haven’t jumped, or hopped, or skipped for decades…maybe even since childhood. It feels silly, we’ve got fat and boobs flying, and maybe not very coordinated. And, just about everything around says impact hurts your joints and bones. So, doing jump squats, back squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses feel dangerous. I totally get that. A couple of y

Growing The Movement
As I recently announced, we're opening a gym, expanding the concept of "feminist fitness" with The Movement. Our physical space and online presence are spaces to celebrate movement, but also for growing a movement of progressive fitness professionals to work with all clients. So, over the next few months, we will be recruiting some of the best trainers and teachers we can find! And, I'm over the moon to announce our first addition to The Movement fitness team, Gena Collie

Including Your Partner
Working out with your significant other is a great way to help you both stay consistent. I'm sure you've heard that before. And, it can be true. But, trying to workout with your partner can also feel like running a a three-legged potato sack race. Trying to coordinate another human's motivations, schedule, and movement preferences to be the same as yours is an exceptionally big ask. When I work with clients, I often ask them who in their lives support their exercise and f

Big Steps
Got the keys! I'm going to open a gym! It's true! And, after a long time searching and negotiating and learning a lot about architecture, zoning, financing, and markets (I am a researcher after all!), we landed on 6711 Airport Highway. We will occupy the suite in the back. The space is perfect. The address is Holland, Ohio, but it is seconds off the 475 exit at State Rt. 2 (Airport Highway), so very easy access. And, we'll share a parking lot with Starbucks! The physical

Nerding Out To Movement
I will always be a nerd at heart, and my venture into fitness has proved no different. Over the last couple of years, I've eagerly consumed articles and books about the fitness industry, marginalized communities and exercise, and studied the body and exercises. And my wonder and awe about what the body can do, and how movement can act as medicine, has only multiplied. And when I get excited about something I learn, I love to share it and spread the joy! I've been known to
